Technology Watch - Windows Vista

The advent of Microsoft Windows Vista™ brings some new challenges to the imaging and deployment arena. The file system that Vista runs on is identical to that of XP thus granting net-runna Enterprise complete preboot access. Vista’s BCD (Boot Configuration Data) replaces the boot.ini requiring some changes in working practise for all imaging tools. We are about to release a free tool that prepares the BCD for imaging thereby preventing startup errors experienced with Vista after deployment.

Microsoft Vista

Vista also uses a different model for volume licenses, which needs all deployed machines to either connect to the internet or be licensed using the VLMT (Volume License Management Tool) which will need internet access itself. Look to future editions of the tech-news for scenario examples that deal with these rollout challenges.

Did you know?
net-runna offers remote access to the preboot menus

Remote control of preboot clients requires two steps. Firstly the client must be told which IP address has the right to take control. Secondly the machine with the matching IP must run the rconsole tool.

net-runna preboot remote control

Step 1

Step 2

  • Right-click on a client in the Management Console
  • Select “Boot Settings" from the context menu
  • Click on the "Scripts" tab and type:

AddRemoteConsole(“remote controllers IP“,port);
The default port is 4021

  • Example: AddRemoteConsole(“10.10.10.1”,4021);
  • Click the "Save" and "OK" button
  • On the controlling machine
    (e.g. the machine that has the IP 10.10.10.1 from the above example)
    run …\REMBO\rconsole\rconsole.exe and provide the IP and port of the client in the dialog box that appears
